02 February 2026 - Beryl Cook Exhibition
A hundred years after her birth, a retrospective of the Plymouth artist's work is being put on in her adopted home city. Beryl Cook: Pride and Joy at The Box, aims to bring serious artistic recognition to an artist whose colourful and comedic paintings of the daily life of Plymouth's residents, were often dismissed by critics.
The free exhibition follows on the heels of international shows in both New York and Los Angeles and aims to celebrate the artist's love of the city where she lived for 40 years. It aims to reframe Cook as a documenter of the city's working class, LGBTQ+ communities and nightlife.
A self-taught artist, Cook painted 500 pictures during her life time (1926-2008) and enjoyed commercial success. She received fan mail from around the world, some of the letters are in the exhibition. Her plus-size subjects were joyous drag queens, women, sailors and old ladies all having a good time on nights out, in Plymouth shopping, playing cards or bingo.

Artist Louise Millin has joined the group of artists to show at our galleries in Stow on the Wold (Cotswolds) and Bath. Louise Millin is a contemporary British artist known for her atmospheric interior scenes, where light, colour, and quiet detail shape a distinctive sense of place. Her original paintings capture the subtle character of lived‑in rooms—spaces marked by memory, stillness, and human presence just out of frame. Collectors are drawn to the way Millin transforms everyday interiors into contemplative works of art, each piece offering a moment of calm reflection. Her work is regularly showcased by leading UK galleries, including Red Rag Gallery, where her interiors continue to attract strong interest from buyers seeking thoughtful, timeless paintings.
