Martin Llewellyn Artist CV

Martin Llewellyn (born 1963 in Neath, South Wales) is a leading contemporary Welsh landscape artist, celebrated for his distinctive palette-knife oil paintings. A self-taught painter with a career spanning Read more

more than twenty-five years, Llewellyn first worked in watercolour before discovering that oils offered the expressive, tactile qualities that define his mature style. His paintings are instantly recognisable for their bold knife work, textured surfaces and harmonious, understated colour palette.

Living and working in South Wales, Llewellyn draws continual inspiration from the dramatic landscapes around him. The mountains of Snowdonia, with their shifting weather and powerful silhouettes, are central to his practice, while the coastlines of Anglesey and North Wales provide equally compelling subjects. His work captures the rugged character of Wales with clarity, atmosphere and emotional restraint.

Llewellyn’s paintings show the influence of Sir Kyffin Williams, one of the most important Welsh artists of the 20th century, yet his technique remains unmistakably his own. His palette-knife marks are finer and more deliberate, often applied on a more intimate scale. His artistic lineage also reflects the legacy of Welsh painters such as Charles Wyatt Warren and Gwilym Prichard, whose appreciation for the Welsh landscape resonates throughout his work.

Known for their rich textures and muted, atmospheric tones, Llewellyn’s paintings offer a powerful response to the Welsh countryside. Whether depicting the peaks of Snowdonia or the force of the Irish Sea along the Anglesey coast, his work continues to attract collectors seeking contemporary Welsh landscape art with depth, authenticity and a strong sense of place.

Original paintings by Martin Llewellyn are available at Red Rag Gallery in Stow on the Wold, where his work remains highly sought after by collectors of modern British and Welsh art.
