Art by Romeo di GIROLAMO British Art and Artists at Red Rag Gallery Romeo di Girolamo (1939-2022) was born in Civitella Casanova, Italy in 1939. He moved to England with his family in 1949 and for much of his life has lived in Buckinghamshire. Romeo di Girolamo's artistic qualities were first recognised and encouraged by the Headmaster of his village school in Buckinghamshire where Romeo won an Art Drawing Competition at 13.The young di Girolamo also displayed a talent for sport. He excelled at athletics, football and boxing, winning district and county honours for all three sports. Between1954-59 Romeo di Girolamo attended High Wycombe School of Art winning several prizes and scholarships including the Buckinghamshire Art Scholarship, a Royal Academy Travelling Art Scholarship and a Granada Theatres National Art Painting Prize. At seventeen Romeo di Girolamo started exhibiting paintings at the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). He was elected to full membership of the RBA at the age of twenty three. By the age of nineteen di Girolamo had made his debut at the Royal Academy of Art (RA) where in the early sixties his contemporary paintings of large industrial landscapes brought him international acclaim. The Federation of British Artists honoured him in 1967 by mounting a one man exhibition. The same year Romeo received La Voce Award for outstanding Anglo Italian Art personality of the year. In 1978 the Italian government conferred on him the title Cavaliere OMRI (Knighthood) for outstanding achievements in Art. In addition to success as a contemporary painter Romeo di Girolamo has also had a distinguished career in art and design education. From 1989 Romeo served as an external art consultant to a number of educational bodies. He was chairman of Queens Park Arts Centre and is currently on the Governing Bodies of The Federation of British Artists and Sir William Ramsey School. The Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) elected di Girolamo as their President in 1998. He was instrumental in the introduction of the Fine Art educational policy. Romeo has also assisted in helping Astor School, Dover achieve Specialist Arts College status. Romeo di Girolamo most recent painting successes include the De Laszlo Medal for Art, the Italia Award and the Coley and Tilley Art Prize.
