with the artistic trend for abstract conceptualism. This led to a move away from the visual arts and he became a singer-songwriter. After about four years, Burns became disillusioned with the music industry and found new inspiration in teaching art.

After ten years of teaching Gerard Burns became a full time professional artist. Inspired by the artist Velasquez he started painting large canvases. Using friends and family as models Burns turned ordinary scenes into mythic dramas. Talking about his art work Gerard says: 'I paint real people, real scenes, real life'.

Today Gerard Burn's paintings and limited edition prints display a distinctive style, skillfully blending the traditional with a contemporary representation.

In addition to Red Rag Scottish Art Gallery Gerard Burns has exhibited at other leading Scottish Art Galleries including the Royal Glasgow Institute where he was a prize winner in 1997. He also shows at a number of other leading contemporary British Art Galleries and won the coveted Not The Turner Prize in 2003.
