Terry Rushworth (b.1950, Oldham) is a British artist whose highly detailed figurative paintings occupy a distinctive Read more

position within Contemporary Art and the wider field of British Art. Working in oil and pencil, he produces complex, tightly rendered compositions defined by exceptional precision and an unusual density of detail. His paintings reward close, analytical viewing and stand apart for their individuality and technical control.

Rushworth trained at Oldham Art School and later at Manchester Metropolitan University. Early in his career he co‑founded the Embryo Group, exhibiting across the North West and establishing a reputation for rigorous, narrative‑driven work. He went on to exhibit with The Portland Gallery, Manchester, and was selected to represent Northern artists in a major exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London.

After a period working in illustration and educational software, Rushworth returned fully to painting in 2015. His recent work shows a clear, focused direction: symbolically charged images informed by childhood memory, religion, mythology, literature and the English landscape. The level of detail in these paintings is a defining characteristic, giving each work a distinctive visual intensity.

Today, Rushworth’s work is represented by Red Rag Gallery in both Stow on the Wold (Cotswolds) and Bath. His contribution to British Art is marked by a commitment to craftsmanship, narrative structure and meticulous detail — qualities that position him firmly within the most distinctive voices in Contemporary Art.
