Each of Martin Leman''s cat portraits is unique. ''Captain'' is a cat sitting on a mat the border of which matches the picture of a yacht on the wall; it is as if they are both framed or contained. Quirky settings, expressive faces and an engaging style all contribute to Leman''s great popularity. Martin Leman has a special affinity with Cornwall and in particular St Ives, which forms the background to some of his most notable cat paintings. ''Captain'' is perhaps painted with reference to Cornwall.
