Orford has been important historically for it''s role in coastal defence. In ''Orford, Suffolk'' Colin Orchard has chosen the harbour front and rows of yachts moored along it to represent Orford. Orchard has created interest through his use of parallel masts and the juxtaposition of land and sky. There is an atmosphere of brooding storm about the painting.

His paintings have regularly featured at the Royal Academy Summer shows. In 2007 he was appointed a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.
