''Open Doors - Passer By'' is one of three paintings that Charles Hardaker painted in 2004 specifically for an exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. Of the three paintings only two were completed in time for the selection committee to assess and this is one of the two. It was therefore displayed for six weeks at the Mall Galleries then stored from 2004 - 2022 in the artist''s studio. After eighteen years in storage this painting was exhibited in January 2023 at Red Rag Gallery in Bath.

The painting is unique in that it is only one of two of Charles'' interior scenes featuring a figure. This came about after the artist saw a Vilhelm Hammershøi exhibition at the Royal Academy and was intrigued by how Hammershøi placed figures in his artworks.
