British Art: Contemporary sculptures by sculptor Stanley Dove

Stanley Dove was born in 1931 and died in 2022. He studied shoe design and manufacture at Cordwainers College from 1947-49 and eventually started his own successful shoe factory in London, which he ran until 1979.

A gradual move away from his commercial business interests enabled Stanley to study art as a mature student at Camden Art Centre, where he concentrated on experimental painting, life drawing and etching.

In 1987 Stanley Dove retired from all his commercial activities and began concentrating on a career of full time sculpture. Stanley has since exhibited widely throughout the UK and Europe including the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts.

The majority of Stanley Doves sculptures are made from solid bronze but he also produces art pieces in bronze resin. Stanley is particularly well known for his love of hare. He has create small pieces featuring hares up to sculptures well over 5ft tall. To celebrate the year 2000, Stanley created a giant version of the apocalypse horseman, which he sculpted with flammable materials reaching over 12ft tall. This outstanding sculpture was burnt on New Millennium eve in North Devon and is registered as one of the UK Millennium Beacons.
