combinations with a broad range of brushwork, shows a maturity and visual understanding beyond many artists’ capabilities.
As with many Scottish painters, Peter Graham’s influences include the Scottish Colourists and the French Impressionists, and so a romance, bordering on obsession, with intense colour and it’s variances under light has developed alongside his artistic practice.
In order to accurately and intuitively capture this play of light and colour Peter Graham almost exclusively paints ‘en plein air’, splitting his time between his home in Glasgow and traveling worldwide to satiate his need for new subject matter. Despite working predominantly from life, Peter Graham’s paintings have a strong sense of design and this blend of considered composition and immediacy results in a painting emanating effortlessness and sincerity.
A combination of detailed brushwork and looser strokes creates movement, harnessing the essence of his subject, be that harbours and cafes of the South of France, the coast of Scotland and California, or the beautiful grandeur of elegant interiors in London and New York dining rooms.
With a presence in the British art scene for over 30 years, exhibiting regularly with 5 of the Royal Societies and being an elected member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, Peter Graham has an ever growing national and international reputation for his distinct paintings.
