Painting: Quartet

The Ian McWhinnie figures in 'Quartet' are highly stylised and seem two-dimensional. It is as if they are Read more

unhappy models or mannequins, passing through the scenery he paints. The figures neither engage with each other or the viewer, never making eye contact with their glassy staring eyes. All this creates a theatrical feel to Ian McWhinnie's contemporary art. Whilst not engaging with the characters portrayed, we are intrigued by them and drawn into their world.

'Quartet' shows a male singer and his three female backing singers. Each seems separate and detached from the other. The idea that they are linked in a 'Quartet' seems a cruel irony. This separation is reinforced by McWhinnie's distinctive style. Ian McWhinnie's background in ceramics shows in his painting style. Each figure is clearly defined and stands out from the background.

In addition to Red Rag Scottish Art Gallery Ian McWhinnie has exhibited at other leading Edinburgh Art Galleries. Each painting at Red Rag is sourced from the Ian McWhinnie artist studio and like all Red Rag Scottish art and Contemporary art it can be shipped worldwide.
