'The Delivery' shows twelve lighthouses, eleven striped and one black, aboard a fishing boat. As in Read more
many of David Schofield's paintings, the boat appears to be floating in space and have no point of reference. In this way Schofield plays with our ideas of imagination and reality.
Lighthouses are a recurrent theme as symbols of safety within Schofield's paintings. The perception of safety and what constitutes a saviour is explored in much of David's work. On closer inspection the lighthouses are often subverted or challenged by details such as being placed out of context, on a boat in this case.
