With an extensive and award-winning background in visual arts, in his latest works Ian Winton uses his creative eye to capture whimsy and narrative through highly detailed figures. Marrying the mystery of his often enigmatic backgrounds with such photorealistic characters, we are thrown into the fragmented world of his paintings that instinctively conjure imaginative wonderings.

Winton regularly uses abstract and patterned backgrounds which lend themselves to forgotten, fanciful and dream like themes. Built up layer upon layer in a multitude of mediums, Winton relishes in this stage of loose working, allowing himself to follow serendipitous paths and intuitive creativity. From here, he is able to meticulously flesh out the focal point of the painting, which has drawn upon and whose story is rooted in the rich layering and depth of the background on which it inhabits.
