Jim Farrant was born in Somerset in 1972. His childhood was spent growing up in the family of a leading British artist and he studied Fine Art at Somerset and Portsmouth Colleges.
After graduation Jim Farrant travelled extensively around Australia, India and North America. His experiences during this formative time were hugely influential on his developing style in terms of colour, form and sheer scale of his high impact canvases.
Talking about his art Jim Farrant says: 'Recently I have been inspired by the American realist school and this is reflected in my current work. The painting process always begins with a photograph or two of people from everyday life. I then make a composite picture. It could end up with a street scene containing interesting figures which have been taken from a number of different situations ' this allows me to create a definite composition and I then sketch this on to a panel and the painting process begins. Colour and its tonal qualities are extremely important to me. I want my paintings to be realistic but with an energy and freedom of execution'
