Gordon Mitchell was born in Edinburgh in 1952. He studied art at Edinburgh College of Art from 1970 – 1974. Following this Gordon perused a career in teaching art

In 1989 Gordon Mitchell decided to concentrate on full time painting. Since then his art work has won numerous awards. His paintings are represented in a number of important public and private art ollections including Kansas City Art Institute, Paisley Art Institute, Ralli Museums, Royal Bank of Scotland, Scottish Arts Council, and the University of Edinburgh.

Gordon Mitchell is a prolific painter. He aims for an intensive, regular, daily eight hours in his art tudios. He describes himself as an 'abstract expressionist' who wants his art to be thought-provoking. Mitchell can find inspiration in a group of words, a topical news story, but more usually it's a visual pun that his paintings develop out of.

Gordon Mitchell has been described as one of the finest Scottish draughtsman and imaginative painters of his generation. His paintings display a balance and tonal harmony of a fine Edinburgh colourist. Mitchell uses humour, pathos and irony in his paintings to interpret his thoughts and make them palatable to a world that might sometimes rather not be reminded of the problems it faces, collectively or individually. His art is not however always inspired by the darker side of life.

Mitchell is now the Convenor of the Royal Glasgow Institute. He is also a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and was formerly the Vice President of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.
